Steele, Dufner overcome shortcomings to lead PGA Championship
JOHNS CREEK, GA. - Brendan Steele and Jason Dufner can make at least a name for itself in the PGA Championship. Until the big trophy from Sunday, however this big very much remains a secret.
How they handle the pressure of the last round?
Can you safely by 4-hole target, as navigate under the most brutal courses?
And just who are these guys anyway?
Rarely, a major tournament has so much inexperience at the top, that is included in the final round. Steele is probably the first rookie since John Daly in 1991-European in the final group of a-Dur play.
Steele, already a winner this year on the PGA Tour and no. 121 in the world showed remarkable stance Saturday by overcoming a double bogey on the seventh hole. He ran four Birdies over his next seven holes, and not even a secure bogey on 18 may by a 4-under 66, him a share of the lead.
He is tied with Jason Dufner, which investigated 34, for his first PGA Tour victory. Dufner, stoic as ever, and with a piece of tobacco jutting from his lower lip, atoned for a couple of three-putt bogeys on the back nine with two birdies. He only a green missed in the third round and shot 68.
They were at 7-under 203, a shot clear of Keegan Bradley, a 25-year-old rookie, who won this year. Bradley, playing in the last group, with a double bogey, to expect that may have been given his inexperience opened. He also sprang back with remarkable stability nine play on the rear bogey-free and rallying point for a 69.
Now comes the hard part.
You forget that only one of the top 10 players in the world in four pickup-Steve Stricker, who shot 69 and was three behind. Or, that British open, Tiger Woods and defending champion Martin Kaymer Darren Clarke missed all masters the cut. Or, that US Open champion Rory McIlroy exploded in a round of 74 and was of conflicts.
Atlanta Athletic Club is the way, of course, that removes images, can take without prior notice. Jim Furyk discovered by three balls into the water on the last four holes for a couple of double bogeys.
"Wishy-washy game not going to get it done," said Steele.
Much experience is directly behind them.
Scott Verplank, who can become to 47 of the second-oldest great masters, rattled in a 50-foot-putt on 17, green for a highly unlikely birdie, then on the par-4-18 to put and escaped with par by a 18-foot putt for a 69. He was only two shots behind.
Stricker, the highest-ranked Americans in the world rankings took only 10 putts on the front nine at no. 5, as his round quickly could be gone South. He continued across the organization with a solid for par on the last hole.
"Everyone will be, deal with their nerves, and the pressure of trying to win", said Stricker. "I think it is, which hold together which can best and play patience and some good golf."
Only two players in the top 12 on the leader board Majors--won world champion masters Charl Schwartzel and David Toms, who won the PGA Championship on this course, 10 years ago. They were at 2-under 208, five shots behind.
Also in this group was Adam Scott to come from a victory on the Firestone last week. He struggled to a 70, but hope is not lost.
"You up to six shots in the last four holes to make," said Scott, who was six behind when he finished. "So yes, I believe that you can make up to six shots in the last round."
The last round is so much in the air, making desperate even Lee Westwood, otherwise stellar career finally a great addition in the mix, despite a bad hole remains, its afternoon spoiled. A tee shot, only in a bunker in the 14th fairway led mounted to a three putt double bogey on 14. He still managed a 70 and was six shots behind.
Luke Donald, the No. 1 player in the world, even without a-Dur, is, within a recording lead only to find the water on the 18-hole and close with a double bogey, so that he is seven shots behind learned.
"It offers few birdie opportunities and can it under par," said Donald. "But there are out there, you have to weather some tough holes and the master at the end of the week is hard who best played probably that."
The last player, in his first attempt to win a-Dur's Ben Curtis in the British Open 2003 at Royal St George. The last American to a-Dur his first PGA Tour victory was Shaun Micheel at the PGA Championship in 2003 at Oak Hill.
"It's a great week for me to just be in the field" Steele said she won open Texas a week after the masters. "Have a chance in really win my first big is really something special."
Bradley, the nephew of LPGA tour great Pat Bradley, won the Byron Nelson Championship in may, claiming last week at Firestone. If it started with a double bogey, he has in a panic move.
"It really does not discourage me so much" said Bradley. "My goal was to see to respond to all that happened out there today, good or bad." And, you know, I took it pretty well. I knew that it was a very important time for me to remain calm and stay patient, or it could have from me. "And I did, which was good."
Saturday was the day the art if it from the many player could have received. Despite more humid temperatures, the rookies was their composure to keep.
Unlike Hansen from Denmark, who has never seriously maintained in a-Dur, also with a 70 held and was at 3-under 207 along with Pebble Beach winner d.a. points, who walked nine holes without making but still has a par of 71 shot.
The hardest part about Sunday could kill tee-time until the late afternoon. This should be no problem for Steele, who always the last tee time on tour because of the his rookie status spent the first three months.
Then again, that was an another reminder how far he has already come.
