So, Borderlands. That was fun, right? Tons of cooperative play, shooting and looting, and even more guns for you to play. 2K and Gearbox Software decided to unleash Borderlands 2 and show it publicly for the first time at PAX Prime 2011. With a front row seat, the developers started us off in a noticeably different environment.

Pandora's gone through quite a change and Gearbox started their demo in a snow level. The quest titled "A Dam Fine Rescue" occurs about a third of the way through the game. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to infiltrate the bandit camp and rescue a friend. Before you encounter any bandits you'll be fighting off Bullymong snow creatures. You can still wound the creature's limbs and inhibit their movement before finishing them off.

The developer driving the demo picked up a gun from a new manufacturer, Tediore, which he called the "Walmart of Guns". This particular firearm can be thrown away, at which point it'll explode. The size of that blast is dependent on how much ammo is left in the clip.

Picking up another weapon, the developer pointed out that the bandits now manufacture their own weapons. You could see all the crap that went into the make of the gun as it's held in the character's hands. The developer continued through the Frostspring Basin and pointed out a new feature in Borderlands 2:

A minimap!

Using this new navigation tool the dev quickly made his way to a nomad hide out where a giant nomad with a midget chained to him started attacked. Pinpointing the chains holding the midget, the developer released the diminutive prisoner who started to attack his captor.

When the nomad hit the midget with his shield, the little guy went flying. After defeating both enemies, the developer moved into a building where he met up with his cooperative partner, a siren by the name of Maya.

The beginning of the dam area was called Bloodshot Ramparts, a place split into two colors: the green hills in the distance and the steel ramparts of the dam. Once the developer encountered the first group on enemies, we learned that Roland from the original game was the friend he was about to rescue. It turns out all four original Borderlands characters will play a role in the new game's plot.

A massive Warden enemy is holding Roland and sends flares up in the sky to signal a moon base. That base launches enemies who crash into the environment around the player to support the Warden. In order to take down these invading enemies, the developer picked up a second assault rifle, stating that you can dual-wield any weapon in Borderlands 2.

Dropping his two weapons, the developer picked up a Vladoff minigun to finish off the Warden and rescue Roland. Before he could destroy the massive mech, though, it knocks him off the dam. The player character, while falling, gives the remaining enemies the double finger.

The developers noted that Borderlands 2 will still have that Gearbox attitude and even more guns. Look out for more information on the title in the next year.
