Batman: Arkham City Moves 4.6 Million Units in First Week
AppId is over the quota
Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment did a little gloating this morning, and they have every right to. Batman: Arkham City has shipped over 4.6 million units worldwide in just one week of being on the market.
The figure more than doubles the launch week sales of Arkham Asylum, and makes Arkham City one of the top-selling titles of the year. The game also is the highest-rated title of the year on both the Xbox 360 and PS3, metascoring 95 and 96 respectively.
GameRevolution awarded the title with a super-prestigious A-grade on its report card. Something Batman would have totally brought home and showed his parents if they weren't murdered in that alleyway.
Batman: Arkham City is well on its way to being a Game of the Year contender, and quite possibly, winner. Look out for our full end of the year awards, coming in December.
Batman: Arkham City - GR Review
AppId is over the quota
I realized something last night after completing Batman's latest campaign against scum and villainy. The best games are the ones that make you feel something. Limbo's quiet violence makes you feel lost, alone, and in danger. The best moments in Assassin's Creed make you feel like an assassin yourself, at once alone, deadly, and at war with ancient forces. Earlier this year, Portal 2 made me feel so much like a freaking genius that I rewarded it accordingly.
So what is it about Batman: Arkham City that makes me feel so much like Batman?
That's all I'll say. Storytelling in games is difficult enough without someone spoiling it for you. Arkham City's wealth of side missions will attempt to distract you, but breathlessly speeding your way through the campaign is more than forgivable. This is a Batman tale served more faithfully to the character and comics than any Batman movie has done. The best pieces from Nolan's latest works are present, as are the gothic themes from Burton's classic. With longtime Batman scribe Paul Dini at the helm, it's no surprise that AC is as engrossing as the masterful Batman: The Animated Series.
Rocksteady's heavily modified Unreal Engine is a sight to behold as well. I'd go so far as to say the developer has beaten Epic Games at its own technology with Batman: Arkham City handedly surpassing Gears of War 3's highest visual achievements. The entirety of the open world is detailed, vibrant, and packed to the gills with content.
Even the game's boss battles managed to reach highs I haven't seen in some time. At once varied and challenging (as level bosses should be), Arkham City's gallery of rogues will only serve to propel you further through the story and the world.
I'm gushing, I know. When a game gives you the ability to silently dispatch a number of firearm-wielding hoodlums, grapnel hook and glide to a completely different location, and then enter fisticuffs with a group of 20+ gangsters, you can't help but fall in love. I put the controller down and said, "I am vengeance, I am the night, I am the Batman."
So what's there not to like? It's difficult to say really. I'd be reaching if I harped on about any one aspect of the game. I suppose certain villains could really have used more screen time, but the main attractions get exactly as much room as they need. I would also say Arkham City could be a little bigger, but you'd be sacrificing the open world's density. Finally, there's the business behind the Catwoman DLC, but you should buy the game new to reward Rocksteady for their achievement anyway.
The long and the short of it is that you need to play this game. You've just got to play it. Even if you're not a fan of Batman, there's a lot to love in Arkham City. It's easily stolen a spot on my Game of the Year shortlist, and it will on yours too.
Now if you'll excuse me, I've got some faces to smash and some thugs to string up on gargoyles. These streets won't clean themselves, you know. *Vanishes*

Batman: Arkham City Looks at UK from Its Lofty Gargoyle Perch
AppId is over the quota

Our latest sparkling 'A' recipient, Batman: Arkham City is taking names all over the world, particularly after shipping 4.6 million units worldwide in just one week. And a lot of those names are in the United Kingdom.
In a list of individual formats units sold in the UK, both the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of Batman: Arkham City has even defeated Sega's Football Manager 2012, Forza Motorsport 4 with its Top Gear love, and Just Dance 3 (finally). It has also dethroned FIFA 12 in Ireland.
Unfortunately, it's only fourth in Denmark and seventh in Netherlands, behind the likes of Sims 3: Pets and Pro Evolution Soccer 2012. Of course, those countries are close to Belgium, and you know how we feel about that.

Gamestop Giving Batman: Arkham City Used Purchasers Catwoman Pass for Free

An internal memo verified with GameStop locations tells its retail staff that used copies of Batman: Arkham City should be paired with a code for Catwoman content printed on the receipt. All of this seems fairly counteractive to the online pass code itself, but GameStop is a huge corporation with some pretty strong ties with publishers.
We'll bring you more details as they become available. How many used copies of Batman: Arkham City will there be on shelves if the game isn't even out yet?

We're only a mere few days away from the release of a sure Game of the Year front-runner, Batman: Arkham City. This is Batman Arkham City, folks. It needs no introduction. It needs no hype. But Warner Bros. is bringing it anyway with a brand-new launch trailer.

Redeem Your Batman: Arkham City Online Pass for Catwoman
AppId is over the quota
With copies of the game making their way to the streets, Gothamites have found that Catwoman's gameplay both in the story mode and in challenge maps is locked to those who did not purchase Batman: Arkham City new or have not bought a VIP pass for $10.
DLC packs will also unlock Robin and Nightwing, but Catwoman has been heavily marketed as part of the game. Playing as the thief is not required to complete the game. Those playing the campaign without an online pass will see Catwoman in cutscenes but her gameplay sections are completely missing.

Batman: Arkham City - Final Preview
AppId is over the quota

Through the entire lead-up to the upcoming release of the very much anticipated Batman: Arkham City, I have not yet had any chance to see the game. Not at GDC. Not at E3. Not anywhere. Okay, I'm lying a bit. Being a ninja myself, it's just not within the code of conduct to see Batman, despite his choice of costume, unless it's completely necessary. Luckily, this time, it was.
It's difficult to say anything about Batman: Arkham City that hasn't already been said from my fellow GR comrades. Perhaps the only thing I can do is shed some clarity. While Arkham City is an open-world game, which in itself is a tremendous feat worthy of the Batman name, this isn't about exploring the entirety of Gotham City but merely a particularly large section of the city that has been turned into a large complex to hold all the inmates. Batman has the heart not to kill any of them, but none of the inmates really have any, so they just break out and start causing a huge ruckus. Actually, I think Batman allows this to happen just to clean up the mess. It's his daily exercise.
The situation soon spirals out of control and Batman swoops into solve the problem, and by that I mean pulverize muscled guys like human punching bags. It's the natural consequence that happens when you give inmates way too much whey protein powder and weight equipment and deprive them of even the sight of another woman. They get all mad and start wearing clown makeup and think they actually stand a chance against Batman. As usual, he can take on a group of overconfident thugs with just a few punches, kicks, and counterattacks; if they've got guns, he can just use the many ledges installed just for him that allow him to grapple his hook and slip behind them like a true ninja.
Just to give them a fighting chance, the Rocksteady developers have given enemies grenades, night-vision goggles, and some gadgets that jam Batman's detective mode, not that he really needs it in combat. To address complaints of the first game, they have disabled certain navigational aids in detective mode so that players will actually want to come out of it. That said, Batman also has new weapons of his own, including one makeshift electrical taser gun that can be used to stun enemies, short-circuit some computer systems, and attract and repel metallic objects. His fighting moveset has also nearly doubled in size and the animations have been made noticeably more fluid.
But you probably knew all that already, so I'm just going to talk about how to glide and swoop around the city like you've always wanted to do. Standing atop any high structure, Batman can launch himself into the air and glide almost silently almost anywhere in his surrounding. From midair, he can then dive and relaunch himself high into the air, or grapple-hook onto another ledge to propel himself even farther. So don't be surprised to find YouTube videos showing off how long some player with a whole lot of spare time can stay in the air before touching the ground.
Of course, as you fling yourself from one side of the island to the other, you will come across plenty of side quests for extra experience points as well as Riddler's Trophies. Given that the size of the island is estimated to be about six times as large as the setting of Arkham Asylum, that's a lot of time waiting to be spent on exploring. Some of the trophies are even highlighted pink, which means they can only be picked up by Catwoman, who can swap in for Batman once you finish her introductory story sequence.
There aren't many sure bets when it comes to video games, but Batman: Arkham City looks to be one of them. Look for it to swoop into our hands October 18th.
(P.S. I'm not going to spoil what happens, even though I'm allowed to report on it. I just don't think it's necessary and you're going to buy the game anyway, right? RIGHT??!!!)

Cutscene Guidelines
I know its unnecessary to restate how much I like a good story in a video game, but seeing as a I parodoxically did anyways, I will gladly repeat: I love a good story in a video game (though I'll be sure to minimize how often I do so as not distract from my topics.) Seeing as I brought up story in games again, I would like revisit something that I touched upon in my first post. I mentioned that some games are overly reliant on cutscenes to convey plot development and exposition that is...
