3DS Could Eclipse First-Year DS Sales
AppId is over the quota
Ok, so I'll admit it, the 3DS didn't rocket off to amazing sales like I had first predicted. The software just wasn't there, a fact that hopefully Nintendo has taken to heart for future hardware releases (I wouldn't hold my breath, though). But despite all that, those of us here at GR who play and own the 3DS have known that it wasn't a matter of if the system would take off, but when.

I'd have to say that time is upon us, my friends. You might be surprised to learn that despite its initial struggles, the 3DS is actually in a great position to sell more units in its first year than its wildly popular predecessor. The NPD Group's October numbers are in, and the 3DS is up to 1.65 million units sold in the US over its first 8 months.
The DS sold 2.37 million units in its first year, but half of those came during the holidays. Oh hey, that's about this time of year, too! For the 3DS to surpass the original DS, it would need an average of roughly 180,000 units sold per month until March. With Super Mario 3D Land coming out to drive the holiday sales, that target looks very plausible.

The Real Reason Behind 3DS Sales Surge
AppId is over the quota

Nintendo has had plenty of system sales to smile about lately, as the 3DS has been atop the charts for a while, especially in Japan. But one need not delve too deeply into the real cause. No, it's not the arrival of Mario or the August price drop; it's the above-pictured free handout that can be found by the stack at almost any game shop.
Oh, oh, nice work, Nintendo. Sure, dropping the price is all fair, but then you go and fire Link in favor of a cute Japanese girl with a shield and sword? Aw come on, who's not going to be thinking about the 3DS now? Oh, you rascals, Nintendo.
Not that I think 3DS is bad or anything. No, in fact I...I think it's a...pretty system. Yes, so very pretty that I'd...I'd like to hold one right now. Have it keep me company on lonely nights, take my mind off work and other stresses while I handle its delicate curves. I want to laugh with the 3DS, cry with the 3DS, call her old boyfriend a jerk and tell her I love her and prepare to act like it was a joke if she laughs and calls me "so funny" that one summer we spent in the mountains when I was in college....
GTAV Could Smash Day-One Sales Records
AppId is over the quota
This morning's--and maybe this year's--biggest news is that Grand Theft Auto V is official, and a trailer will debut on November 2nd. The entire game industry is abuzz with all things GTA, and industry analysts are already weighing in on the never-before-seen title.
EEDAR's Jesse Divnich says that GTAV's launch could be the biggest of all-time, shattering records previously set by Call of Duty: Black Ops. Black Ops sold over 5 million units worldwide at launch and brough in over $1 billion in revenue.
Michael Pachter, on the other hand, isn't convinced that today's teaser should be considered an official announcment, but more of an "acknowledgement" that an announcement is imminent.
Ya know?... I think that's the smartest thing he's ever said.
NPD Reports Strong Sales of Madden, Gears of War, and Dead Island
AppId is over the quota

Here's what did!
1. Madden NFL 12
2. Gears of War 3
3. Dead Island
4. FIFA Soccer 12
5. NHL 12
Gotta love Madden's continue dominance, and no one should be surprised by Gears of War 3's strong sales. I am taken back by Dead Island's dominance in the market. With review scores tending low on the scales, Dead Island is probably surprising Deep Silver and Square Enix.
Guess that means we're in for more zombies! Take a look at the rest of the top 10 chart and then organize them into your own fantasy list.
6. Deus Ex: Human Revolution
7. Resistance 3
8. Lego Star Wars III: The Clone Wars
9. Call of Duty: Black Ops
10. Warhammer 40,000 Space Marine
Quantic Dream Loses $10 Million in Heavy Rain Second-Hand Sales

In an interview with GamesIndustry.biz, Quantic Dream co-founder Guillaume de Fondaumiere says that he lost "between €5 and €10 million" to second-hand sales for Heavy Rain:
This exaggeration is meant as a comment to the used sales of gaming retailers and the industry's approach to the second-hand market:We basically sold to date approximately two million units, we know from the trophy system that probably more than three million people bought this game and played it. On my small level it's a million people playing my game without giving me one cent. And my calculation is, as Quantic Dream, I lost between €5 and €10 million worth of royalties because of second hand gaming.
Beyond the fact that 2 million units sold is amazing for an independent studio for a PS3 exclusive, I'm not sure if he has the math all right. What portion of the second-hand market is used sales in retailers and how much of it is just some guy lending his copy to his friend or relative who uses a different account? Some people have commented that his comment is just whining, but Guillaurme de Fondaumiere disagrees with the bashing his interview has generated:Now I know the arguments, you know, without second hand gaming people will buy probably [fewer] games because they buy certain games full price, and then they trade them in... Well I'm not so sure this is the right approach and I think that developers and certainly publishers and distributors should sit together and try to find a way to address this. Because we're basically all shooting ourselves in the foot here.
Because when developers and publishers alike are going to see that they can't make a living out of producing games that are sold through retail channels, because of second hand gaming, they will simply stop making these games. And we'll all, one say to the other, simply go online and to direct distribution. So I don't think that in the long run this is a good thing for retail distribution either.
Now are games too expensive? I've always said that games are probably too expensive so there's probably a right level here to find...
[Source]I'm not whining, just opening a discussion here on a subject matter that is being discussed quietly by a lot of people in the industry right now.
I never said we should ban second hand gaming. NEVER. I'm simply pointing to the fact that developers and publishers are not gaining a cent on second hand gaming and that in my humble opinion, this isn't the right model...
You only need to look at the annual reports of certain retail giants to find out that between 30 and 40% of total games software turnover comes from second hand sales today...
How have the sales trends new vs traded evolved in the past few years since traded games were introduced? Are we selling more new games today?
Monster Hunter Portable 3 HD tops JP sales, no one surprised

As I casually around the game shop August 25 went, I noticed that this little parent and pop store, I usually spend their time in terribly full has been received. "The hell?" I was wondering. I looked around and quickly realized, oh I have on crap, in a game shop went... Monster Hunter Day.
The PS3 HD upgrade of the hot-selling Monster Hunter Portable 3 defeated Japan 25th, and surprise, surprise, it is the nation top-seller. The image is included by my crappy cell phone. It was once his time, believe me, but his time was literally 10 years ago. Yes, my phone was new, when the PS2 was new.
Here is the complete list of Japan's top 20 best-selling games for the week of August 22-28.

I counted as 70 people are in this small game shop, and in my town of the half million, let me tell you that there were certainly others with similar situations on their hands. I was not even buy Monster Hunter; I was trading in Tales of VS. It has me barely enough money, to a can of pop, but to buy, so I probably would have me the hassle saved and waited. I have to be the next time more cautious.
He falls 3ds to a quarter of sales last week in Japan

They would think that a 3DS-Preis-Tropfen would encourage sales, but according to the media create sales turnover in Japan have not only suffered, have them fueled.
Where last week 16,415 piece sold the 3ds, it dropped this week to almost 75% to only 4,132. The DSi XL even sold more at 4,176 units with the DSi not far behind with 3,900 units. To say that this is disappointing would be polite.
On top of that, not a 3DS top cracked 20 (9 PSP titles, 6 Wii, 4 DS and 1 PS3) title last week, what not too surprisingly, given the fact that it is still the equivalent of a newborn in the console world. Although the 3 DS has sold 1.3 units so far this year, the DS has sold 32.6 million units and the PSP has sold 17.9 million units in the course of his life in their homeland.
An optimist believes in me, that but not much better will be the 3DS-Preis-Tropfen in America.
PSP sales are still strong in Japan despite looming Vita boost

Nintendo's sales figures got good help from two pieces of new software: One piece unlimited cruise SP promoted new 3ds owner and Pandora's Tower, a currently Japan-only Wii action game aided fading Nintendo's home console. I'm actually really, really interested in Pandora's Tower, the same way I was interested in Sin & punishment of the treasure. Published a Nintendo action game? Please bring it stateside!
