3DS Could Eclipse First-Year DS Sales

Ok, so I'll admit it, the 3DS didn't rocket off to amazing sales like I had first predicted. The software just wasn't there, a fact that hopefully Nintendo has taken to heart for future hardware releases (I wouldn't hold my breath, though). But despite all that, those of us here at GR who play and own the 3DS have known that it wasn't a matter of if the system would take off, but when.

I'd have to say that time is upon us, my friends. You might be surprised to learn that despite its initial struggles, the 3DS is actually in a great position to sell more units in its first year than its wildly popular predecessor. The NPD Group's October numbers are in, and the 3DS is up to 1.65 million units sold in the US over its first 8 months.

The DS sold 2.37 million units in its first year, but half of those came during the holidays. Oh hey, that's about this time of year, too! For the 3DS to surpass the original DS, it would need an average of roughly 180,000 units sold per month until March. With Super Mario 3D Land coming out to drive the holiday sales, that target looks very plausible.

This morning's--and maybe this year's--biggest news is that Grand Theft Auto V is official, and a trailer will debut on November 2nd. The entire game industry is abuzz with all things GTA, and industry analysts are already weighing in on the never-before-seen title.

EEDAR's Jesse Divnich says that GTAV's launch could be the biggest of all-time, shattering records previously set by Call of Duty: Black Ops. Black Ops sold over 5 million units worldwide at launch and brough in over $1 billion in revenue.

Michael Pachter, on the other hand, isn't convinced that today's teaser should be considered an official announcment, but more of an "acknowledgement" that an announcement is imminent.

Ya know?... I think that's the smartest thing he's ever said.

If you haven't heard of this guy before, perhaps you've heard of The Room before. If not, then consider yourself lucky, I guess. The Room is considered by many to be the worst movie of all time, directed by, produced by, written by, and starring... you guessed it, Tommy Wiseau.

Destructoid recently had the infamous filmmaker on their podcast for an interview, and he stated in no uncertain terms his desire to make a video game movie:

Sure, this is the thing, you have to be open-minded. Entertainment's changing, constantly. As you guys know... from 35, to HD, to 'Super-HD' [as] I'm calling it right now. Yes, absolutely you can create a movie based on a game, based on the animation, I mean you can go [to] infinity. You have to be open-minded. Absolutely, the answer's yes, sure.

Did anyone else think that was incoherent babbling? We already have to put up with Uwe Boll thinking he has an ounce of talent to make films out of games, and now this guy wants to do the same. Is there no justice in the world?
