Browns' Hillis misses practice again, questionable vs. Niners

BEREA, Ohio -- At the end of another drama-filled week, Peyton Hillis' playing status for Sunday's game was questionable. However, the Browns running back's marital status had changed.

Hillis missed his second straight practice Friday with a strained hamstring, an injury that kept him out of last week's win over Seattle and could sideline him Sunday when the Browns (3-3) visit the San Francisco 49ers (5-1). Browns coach Pat Shurmur said Hillis will travel with the team and has not yet been ruled out.

"He'll be out there and we'll decide whether he's going to play or not," Shurmur said after practice. "We'll see."

Earlier this week, Shurmur said if Hillis is healthy, he'll start. If he can't play, Montario Hardesty will make his second straight start. Hardesty rushed for 95 yards on 33 carries in last week's 6-3 win over the Seahawks.

On Wednesday, Hillis practiced for the first time since Oct. 16, when he injured his hamstring in the first half against Oakland. He looked moved well and without any trouble during the portion of practice open to reporters, but Shurmur said Hillis reported being "a little sore" on Thursday and spent the past two days getting treatment.

Shurmur didn't think Hillis rushed back too early.

"We brought him back with the idea that he could go out and practice," Shurmur said, adding Hillis ran indoors on Friday. "He did some things, he just couldn't finish, that's all."

Hillis' season has been a constant soap opera with his contract negotiations to secure a long-term extension, a strep throat sickness that caused him to miss a game and the hamstring injury among the main issues that have dominated his second season in Cleveland. It hasn't gone as Hillis expected, and earlier this week the Madden 12 video game cover boy, vowed to stop talking publicly about his contract and focus on playing.

"I'm not going to be a distraction," he said.

One day earlier, Hillis got married in Arkansas. The ceremony was first reported on Arkansas Sports360.com, which posted an online photo of his wedding license. Hillis' marriage was confirmed by a few of his teammates following Friday's practice.

The Browns will be missing starting wide receiver Mohamed Massaquoi this week. Massaquoi sustained a concussion in Sunday's win and has not been cleared by the team's medical staff to return. Massaquoi, who has 18 receptions for a team-leading 239 yards, will be replaced in the starting lineup by Josh Cribbs.

Tight end Benjamin Watson returned to practice Friday after missing two days as he recovered from a concussion sustained last week. He will play Sunday.

Watson, who has 20 receptions, doesn't know exactly when he got hurt. However, he said he was aware something wasn't right because of "fogginess" and "a little headache." The eight-year veteran praised the Browns' medical staff for handling his injury and believes the NFL has done a good job of educating players about the dangers of head injuries.

Watson said he's being much more careful about concussions, and hopes others are honest with themselves and others when they sustain a head injury.

"Every guy who has played football has had a time where they're kind of fuzzy and they've played through it," he said. "You always want to play and that's the hardest thing, and that's where the training staff kind of comes into place. When you got a guy that's kind of iffy, but he tells you that, 'Hey, I'm feeling this way or I'm feeling that way,' it's their job to step in because as players you want to play.

"You see high school guys that have concussions and they keep playing and they're hurt worse later and it's important that teammates check each other out and aren't afraid to say, 'You know what? I don't think this guy is quite right, check him out."'

Notes

Shurmur said backup DE Auston English suffered a knee injury in practice on Thursday and will not make the trip to California. WR Carlton Mitchell purchased a JUGS machine during the offseason to help his pass-catching skills. "I love that thing," he said of the contraption that fires footballs at high speeds. "It's probably the best investment I've ever had. I'll be in the hallway of the condo shooting it or in the parking garage. I got caught a couple of times. It helped a lot. Caught about 1,000 balls a day." Shurmur said RG Shawn Lauvao made it through practice without any problems. He hyperextended his knee last week and missed one day of practice.

Giants' Tuck out again; Umemyiora blasts ex-'mates for criticism

Giants' Tuck out again; Umemyiora blasts ex-'mates for criticism

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Osi Umenyiora definitely has Justin Tuck's back.

He just wonders why former New York Giants teammates-turned-television analysts Antonio Pierce and Michael Strahan don't.

Umenyiora blasted both former players for their criticisms of Tuck. The two were outspoken on Tuck not playing through neck and groin injuries last week, maladies that will keep Umenyiora's bookend and defensive captain out for his third straight game Sunday against Buffalo.

"It's very, very disappointing," Umenyiora said Friday as the Giants concluded preparations for the Bills. "I can understand when the media does it. I don't care about that, that's their job. But the other guys played the game and they know what it's like.

"It's very disappointing, and it makes me question how real and how authentic they really are."

Tuck said earlier in the week that he had a calm, measured conversation with Pierce, who ironically left the game in 2009 because of a neck injury. Pierce said Tuck and running back Brandon Jacobs, heading into his second idle week with a sprained left MCL, needed to play.

"To me," Pierce said, "if you don't have an injury that needs surgery or that's severe, you need to be out there."

Pierce's ESPN comments didn't acknowledge Tuck's reputation as a warrior, honed especially in 2009 when he played through an early-season shoulder injury caused when Dallas tackle Flozell Adams tripped him. Tuck then underwent offseason surgery to correct the partial separation.

Strahan, on Fox, chided Tuck for missing the second half of the Sept. 25 win over the Eagles, when he originally aggravated the existing neck injury.

Umenyiora said he has let his feelings be known to both.

"Every time I see one of these people who've made these statements, I have to let them know that's just ridiculous," Umenyiora said. "All these guys who are saying these things, they went through the same things we went through.

"It's just crazy. They know better. You have to take care of your health. You can't question a guy's toughness. You don't know what he's going through on the football field."

Umenyiora, second behind Jason Pierre-Paul on the Giants with four sacks, left no doubt about his disappointment with both former players. But he also saw the comments as out of character.

"Antonio, he's a good dude," Umenyiora said. "I don't know what happened. He's a good friend of mine and he's going to remain a good friend of mine. Same thing for Strahan. He knows better than that. Stray's my boy, my mentor, but I don't know where that's coming from. It's disappointing."

And then Umenyiora postulated exactly where the genesis of such comments might lie.

"Sometimes you get in the media and you just have to say something," Umenyiora said. "I've been in some of these production meetings and the producer will tell you, create controversy and say some things you otherwise wouldn't have said.

"It's disappointing, but you move on."

Tuck was not available for comment.

Notes

FB Henry Hynoski (neck), G Chris Snee (concussion), and CB Prince Amukamara (foot) are out Sunday. LS Zak DeOssie and C David Baas are questionable. LB Michael Boley (knee) is probable. DeOssie will be a game-time decision, but said he has passed all the concussion tests he has been given to date, with one more to go. Coach Tom Coughlin said Snee is making progress every day from his first career concussion, but not enough to allow him to play. Coughlin said he rarely talks about the concussion with Snee, his son-in-law. The Giants plan to elevate someone from the practice squad, most likely DT Dwayne Hendricks, to fill the roster spot of suspended DT Jimmy Kennedy (illegal substance).

The PR for 2 k games has had to take more than a few * cough * corrections today with Duke Nukem Forever. On the Twitter fiasco with speaker group, YouTube had to lock his account from user MasterOfAudioSurf, after he had put up some shots of the game. He was, of course, livid. Fortunately 2KGames resolve the issue with YouTube and gave him a surprise 12 hours. (And he is in Australia!)

The conclusion makes teen, 17, Nelson once again

IRVING, Texas-Jordan Spieth is too late for his high school graduation ceremony on Saturday, if he ever makes it be. Another round of golf has the teenager with PGA Tour player at the Byron Nelson Championship.

For the second year in a row, the local Dallas amateur make the cut at the Nelson. He was at 3 under for the tournament after a 2-under 68 in the second round Friday.

(Getty Images) The ceremony for Dallas Jesuit prep class of 246 elderly begins Saturday, at an auditorium on the campus of SMU about 20 miles from TPC four seasons at 4 am.

"Right after the round...." I'm going to shoot on it quickly as is possible, "said Spieth.""I don't know how long [graduation] typically lasts."

Because diplomas in alphabetical order, that 17-year-old Spieth be issued numbers, more time will buy at least him something.

"Exactly", he said, smiling. "At least an hour should it be towards the end."

Once in a draw for 16 in the Nelson last year, and in three strokes which lead after 10 holes on the final lap, Spieth of the sponsor received this week again in the tournament to play in liberation.

SPIETH, a US Junior amateur champion, plans to attend the University of Texas, had one of the larger galleries for him during the second round Friday.

"I want to win", Spieth said. "I am confident." "Stay loose and my friends in the crowd to see and feeding of the crowd helps me."

If Spieth his round early Friday afternoon with a bogey at the 411-yard No. 9 hole completed, he was five strokes behind the leading Ryan Palmer and for 10th place.

"Be on this stage as a senior in high school, with 17, it is impressive," Palmer said. "I'm starting to questions whether he thinks College or a year, only about four years."

SPIETH's tea-time on Saturday was the completion of the game by all 153 golfers.

Since his breakthrough in last year's Nelson Spieth had played three or four more times the TPC four seasons course. He was also a more round with former President George W. Bush, play, who lives in Dallas and worked with Spieth's instructor.

"If I remember correctly, he came right out there as we my father and I and told us what we wanted to play game," said Spieth. "There was no reason hold back because he calls me names that I should mention not came out."

"It was just too much fun with him out there have" added Spieth. "I hope to get out there we go again." It has been fun. "Felt as you extremely important played as it is with anyone, which is cool."

SPIETH had an opening 1-under 69 this week Nelson, which included a double bogey and three bogeys. Friday, he had birdies on each of them on those same four holes. Included a 26-foot birdie putt it on the 12th hole, 441 yard after a double bogey Thursday.

He was 5 under before two bogeys in his last five holes Friday when winds began to gust to around 30 mph.

While Spieth of his entire focus is the professionals which may have the edge in experience, put on getting ready for this week succeeded.

"For me I spent preparing for them, here always and preparation the whole entire last month my game for this golf course." The great advantage is, "said Spieth." "While these guys are on the way, you, sometimes four, know five weeks at a time, they get worn out, perhaps not to play their best golf." "And prepared to be only my best golf for this event to play."
