Right this moment, Sony's holding a press conference in Japan ahead of Tokyo Game Show, which starts this week. The company finally confirmed a release date for Vita in Japan: December 17.

Speculation over the release date kicked into overdrive after last night's Nintendo event, where Capcom and Nintendo announced a December 10 release date for Monster Hunter Tri 3G on 3DS.

If the two had launched on the same date, it could have spelled trouble for Sony. Monster Hunter has traditionally been a PSP franchise, and is largely credited with keeping the platform alive in Japan.

No release date has been announced for Vita outside Japan, but it's expected to be 2012.

Several games were announced at the conference, despite most being leaked ahead of time.

Yoshinoro Ono, like everyone else at the event, spent too way much time in font of slides.

Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 and Street Fighter X Tekken are both coming to Vita, with the former being a launch title. Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 will reportedly have an optional touch-based battle system, which sounds like yuck. The game does take advantage of Vita's "Near" feature in some capacity, as well.

Square Enix announced two games: Lord of Apocalypse, a four-player co-op action RPG, and Army Corps of Hell, which we don't know anything about. In more promising news, the company is working on an updated version of Final Fantasy X for Vita, aka the last Final Fantasy game I honestly cared about. That's part snark and sarcasm, part genuine affection for the last Final Fantasy game I poured hours into. No details on what's different, only that it's less remake and more high-definition update and coming to PlayStation 3, too.

Hideo Kojima came on stage to reveal both the upcoming Metal Gear Solid HD Collection--Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker--and Zone of the Enders HD Collection. Kojima's also working on a brand-new, original game that will arrive (at least) on PS3 and Vita, but he wasn't able to say anything about it.

There were very few gameplay demonstrations during the whole conference, an odd turn of events for a machine touted for its amazing screen and powerful hardware.

At the end, Sony unleashed the launch details outside of the release date. There will be 26 games on December 17, with roughly 100 promised in the "launch window." It's unclear what the launch window is and whether that also includes downloadable releases. Some of the new games teased included a new Lumines (!), a port of Ninja Gaiden Sigma, a new Dynasty Warriors, Rayman Origins, Michael Jackson: The Experience and much more--most of the titles were in Japanese.

Sony announced in Tokyo today that the PlayStation Vita will launch in the Japanese market on 17/12 or... 12/17....

Dammit!

December 17th, people. That's when you can expect to see Sony's latest handheld in stores... should you happen to live in the Far East. As much as we would have like to see launch details for the Vita in US and European markets, it's not surprising that those details are still being worked out.

They would think that a 3DS-Preis-Tropfen would encourage sales, but according to the media create sales turnover in Japan have not only suffered, have them fueled.

Where last week 16,415 piece sold the 3ds, it dropped this week to almost 75% to only 4,132. The DSi XL even sold more at 4,176 units with the DSi not far behind with 3,900 units. To say that this is disappointing would be polite.

On top of that, not a 3DS top cracked 20 (9 PSP titles, 6 Wii, 4 DS and 1 PS3) title last week, what not too surprisingly, given the fact that it is still the equivalent of a newborn in the console world. Although the 3 DS has sold 1.3 units so far this year, the DS has sold 32.6 million units and the PSP has sold 17.9 million units in the course of his life in their homeland.

An optimist believes in me, that but not much better will be the 3DS-Preis-Tropfen in America.

Of course, if they had they not realized to the cassettes on play, they had to withdraw in their respective game stores to pick up a Nintendo 3dshead. Japanese sales Tracker media create comes over you with another group of figures finger point. While Sony to fans something to celebrate, the PSPgo has practically admitted defeat at this point. The PSP platform took place first and last in hardware sales. The Nintendo 3ds had pushed modest numbers in second place and the PS3 the best week of the three home consoles. Here are the numbers:

Nintendo's sales figures got good help from two pieces of new software: One piece unlimited cruise SP promoted new 3ds owner and Pandora's Tower, a currently Japan-only Wii action game aided fading Nintendo's home console. I'm actually really, really interested in Pandora's Tower, the same way I was interested in Sin & punishment of the treasure. Published a Nintendo action game? Please bring it stateside! If a few will move it to more Wii's out the door, it will have done its job in America.
