Invoking the name “Langrisser” opens that time capsule resting in the hearts of only the most hardcore strategy RPG fans. Known as Warsong on the Sega Genesis in the States, the first Langrisser was the beginning of a five-title series that, despite the epic scale of its battles and its popularity in Japan, never crossed over to our shores another time. Cue the rolling tumbleweeds.

Langrisser is such an obscure reference by now that all of the US journalists at the Gamania Game Show had no idea what to think when we entered the demo room for Langrisser Schwarz. Before we knew what was going on, we were asked life-defining questions by the Goddess, split into three groups, and told to enter separate doors that represented our destiny and the eternal strife of the universe. And there I was still contemplating the meaning behind Taiwanese Dunkin' Donuts.

Needless to say, it's been long enough since Langrisser's debut in 1991 that any developer who wants to revive the series should have full artistic license to do what they will with the franchise. An MMORPG? Why the hell not? Of course, Gamania is smart enough to include more than several references and story elements from Langrisser's universe to fulfill the potential of the license: Böser, the avatar of Chaos; the magician Jessica; the Goddess Lushiris; and the war trinity between the Descendants of Light, the Empire, and the Demon Tribe. Noriyuke Iwadare will even be reprising his role from the original Langrisser as the game's composer. (I'm sure that's amazing if you know what the hell I've been talking about for the last three paragraphs.)

The whole point behind the Gamania staff asking us journalists the questions from the Goddess Lushiris is straight-forward: Based on the answers to those questions, you will be placed in either the righteous Descendants of Light, the powerful Empire, or the wild and free Demon Tribe. (I like freedom, so I was evil.) Don't worry if you don't like the result of the sorting hat, though; you can simply change your mind immediately after you answer the questions. That doesn't say much about the power of the Goddess of Light or her reasoning as to why she would allow anyone to join the Demon side, but whatever, player choice trumps omniscience power all the time.

As usual, you will select a class from a starting spread of six options—warrior, ranger, guardian, archer, mage, priest—but that's hardly the end of it. After assigning starting abilities, you will earn Training Points that allow you to advance to 1 of 2 classes that will grant new traits and abilities once you fulfill specific requirements. From a basic fighter class, you can transform into a swordsman and then a ninja (guess which class I like) and then one of two secret classes per class tree. Moreover, you can switch classes at any time as long as you have enough TP and you can carry certain abilities from class to class for some welcome customization.

In practice, you can join a party of up to five players and complete quests and story missions central to each of the three alignments. That effectively means that Langrisser Schwarz, which is primarily a hub-style instance-based MMOG, is three games in one if you choose to see each path through. The mission we demoed was a linear level in “The Marsh of Despair” graveyard forest with dead trees, hanging mist, and werewolves. At the end was a Japanese-animated version of a beholder beast with laser-shooting eyes and tentacles (of course).

Luckily, most enemies (and those damn tentacles) are easily defeated just by rotating between the available skills, whether with the keyboard or the controller. In particular, the wizard class I tried had command over a gigantic chargeable fireball, teleportation, an ice storm with an incredible windup time but also incredible power, and what can only be called a spell that summons a Bunny Slime. The cavalry knight, on the other hand, not only has a mount, but a range of melee strikes and charge. On top of that, you have access to an attack based on one of three cards that you can bring into the fray, and these cards can be collected as rewards.

Additionally, you will have a troop of soldiers to command; how many mainly depends on how far up the class tree you are. Your personal bodyguards can be given basic orders of following, defending, and attacking, but will largely step aside (perhaps in awe) at your enemy-disposing flourishes. There seems to be a roshambo effect between cavalry, infantrymen, and pikemen, but it's unclear how substantial this will be.

Langrisser Schwarz is close to release in Asia and will hopefully be available in North American territories next year.

If you haven't heard of this guy before, perhaps you've heard of The Room before. If not, then consider yourself lucky, I guess. The Room is considered by many to be the worst movie of all time, directed by, produced by, written by, and starring... you guessed it, Tommy Wiseau.

Destructoid recently had the infamous filmmaker on their podcast for an interview, and he stated in no uncertain terms his desire to make a video game movie:

Sure, this is the thing, you have to be open-minded. Entertainment's changing, constantly. As you guys know... from 35, to HD, to 'Super-HD' [as] I'm calling it right now. Yes, absolutely you can create a movie based on a game, based on the animation, I mean you can go [to] infinity. You have to be open-minded. Absolutely, the answer's yes, sure.

Did anyone else think that was incoherent babbling? We already have to put up with Uwe Boll thinking he has an ounce of talent to make films out of games, and now this guy wants to do the same. Is there no justice in the world?

The Missing Link Adds a Another Boss Fight to Deus Ex: Human Revolution

The Missing Link Adds a Another Boss Fight to Deus Ex: Human Revolution

It was almost too clear that the painfully disruptive boss fights in Deus Ex: Human Revolution weren't developed by Eidos Montreal. With studio Grip Entertainment at the helm of those awkward moments where players and Adam Jensen were forced to face-off with enemies requiring brute force (read: rocket launchers), things sort of fell apart.

In The Missing Link, Eidos Montreal hopes to prove to players that it can develop boss fights deserving of the Deus Ex name. Asked how they'd accomplish this, Production Coordinator Marc-Andre Dufort said:

We have a boss battle at the end [of The Missing Link], but it's different from the main game boss battles. You can actually not kill the boss. You can do a non-lethal takedown on him. And you can kill him from afar. You can even kill him without him seeing you. It's more of a bigger challenge than a standard boss fight like we have in many games.

Those options sound more like what you'd expect from Deus Ex. Dufort continued:

Everything was done in Montreal at Eidos. It's a lot less frustrating. But it depends on the way you play. If you played more combat in the main game, you probably didn't have any trouble dealing with the boss fights. So we allow the adaptation of the way you play for that particular boss fight. I was playing more of mixed stealth and combat style, so I had some good weapons in my inventory. I didn't have a lot of trouble dealing with them. No, I didn't get any big frustrations dealing with them. But I can understand people playing more stealth style having some frustration dealing with those boss.

The Missing Link DLC will add five hours to the game next month. Deus Ex: Human Revolution is available now for Xbox 360, PS3, and PC.

From what I've seen, the game will load you up with power weapons right before you encounter a boss, so even if you do play stealth, it doesn't seem like that big a deal. Of course, purists are purists. What are your thoughts on the bosses in Deus Ex: Human Revolution?

A video released today confirms our suspicions, Sony has definitely got something up their sleeve. Has KB gone back into hiding? What's with the mystery here? When Sony does something big, the VP of everything awesome is usually behind it.

What exactly doe Sony have in store for us? Watch the video, then tell us what you think that might be.

PC Gaming Set to Dominate Console Gaming?

PC Gaming Set to Dominate Console Gaming?

According to the infographic posted below created by Ignite Game Technologies, developers of the online racing game Simraceway, PC gaming may be back on the rise to reconquer the gaming space: "Now that PCs have developed better graphics and social qualities, gamers may be leaving their PS3s and heading back to the computer chair."

It's difficult for me to be swayed by bare data and polished graphics, and this infographic has its faults in many areas particularly because it's trying to win the argument that PC gaming is winning the console war. I mean, the Xbox 360 and PS3 are technically computers (though I understand the distinction), and the infographic doesn't include figures for the Nintendo DS and 3DS or the PlayStation Portable. As expected, it also bolsters its figures by including downloaded and boxed games on social networks, casual game websites, MMOs, and other PC platforms (from the 2011 Games Market Revenue Report by Newzoo).

Then it goes into how PCs have higher processing power and how new PC games are generally cheap, but that does not include the cost of a PC that can handle the best graphics and sound, and above all, piracy. So far, I've also had to ship two broken Xbox 360s, but I've also had to fix by PC twice as well, though this is not to excuse the questionable hardware of the Xbox 360 nor my maintenance of my laptop.

The figures near the bottom, however, are much more telling about the industry as a whole. Video games have grown 7.2% in the last five years, and as long as we continue to see advances in technology hardware and integration, it will only continue to grow. The last figure, though, on "The Future of PC Gaming" is quite ridiculous with its comparison between NCAA Football '11 and StarCraft II. The mere difference of 29,000 copies between two games in completely different genres and then relating that to the entire console vs. PC argument? Hmm...

There are just some games that belong on PC like RTSs and MMORPGs and others that belong on the console like Mario, Halo, and Uncharted. Both succeed in their respective spaces; there's enough room for everyone to be happy.

RAGE at 3 Discs on 360 and 8GB Install on PS3

RAGE at 3 Discs on 360 and 8GB Install on PS3

AppId is over the quota

When John Carmack took the stage at Quake Con this year, he had something negative to say about every platform you can play Rage on. Damn! What a downer! The PS3's OS is too memory-intensive. The 360 needs a 20+ GB install to run at the best possible quality. PCs are expensive!

With RAGE having gone gold with copies on their way to retailers now, id Software took the opportunity to finalize some other key storage details. PS3 gamers will need to install 8GB of data to the console's hard drive. Xbox 360 gamers will be switching between three separate discs. Speaking with reporters, Creative Director Tim Willits has said:

Sony was great. Kudos to Sony for letting us do that. They don't allow every game to do that. So definitely, hats off. What we were able to do is install all the textures to the highest level. What is nice about the PS3 platform is that it's just one platform. Everyone has one Blu-ray drive, one hard drive, it's all the same. Some of the other systems you have... should I install it on my 360? Should I not install it? So yes, it's very nice.

Willits says that gamers won't need to install every disc, though they should for the best possible RAGE experience on 360. RAGE will be available on PS3, Xbox 360, and PC at retailers on October 4th.

I don't know about you, but Silicon Knights hasn't done much I've liked since Eternal Darkness... and I looooovvvved Eternal Darkness. Giving them a shot at the X-Men brand is a ballsy move, but if this trailer is any indication, I think they did pretty well by themselves.

X-Men Destiny puts you in control of three new mutants, forced to choose between the good X-Men and the bad... Mutants.... Look, this isn't difficult. Magneto looks like Magneto while Cyclops has gone back to the retro wardrobe for some reason. Hey, if that's what they have to do to get Wolverine in his blue and yellow suit, then I'm fine with it.

Choose your side when X-Men Destiny launches on Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, and DS tomorrow, September 27th.

Watching the trailer for Tiara Concerto at the Gamania Game Show stirred up warm, gooey, nostalgic memories of Skies of Arcadia that had long been dormant. With its outlandishly dressed characters, bright and vibrant color palette, and of course, heated battles aboard a flying pirate airship, it’s no wonder that my fellow journalists and I murmured whispers of the Skies of Arcadia 2 that we’ve all wished for oh-so long.
But I shouldn’t mislead you right off the bat—despite the setting and aesthetics, Tiara Concerto is not similar enough to Skies in any way to even be called a spiritual successor. This game is its own beast, a cel-shaded, fast-paced, action-MMORPG. The fact that you’re cavorting around with fellow players on rickety airships to explore the floating islands of the sky world Neume is just nostalgia-laden gravy for those of us who fondly remember Skies.

At the demo we had the option of playing with the keyboard or a 360 controller plugged into our PCs. If you’re familiar with standard MMO controls, the keyboard is a safe and comfortable choice; abilities are mapped to keys 1–9, while the controller simulates this plethora of commands by having you hit your special attack buttons while holding the control stick in different directions to trigger different moves, à la Super Smash Bros.
The only drawback to the keyboard, I found, was that being an action-heavy game, it could sometimes be tricky in the thick of battle to use the WASD keys to move around, which is where a controller excels. Even now, I’m still not sure which control method I prefer.
Either way, the targeting is fairly forgiving—the developers specifically told us that they don’t want the action to revolve around precise aiming. You just need to face your character in the proper direction to hack, slash, or blow up the target, and there’s absolutely no arbitrary “misses” like in many MMOs—if you see your attack hit the target, you’re always going to see those beautiful white numbers pop up and not the accursed “miss” taunting you for not beating a random number generator.

Our demo level had us fighting humanoid fire dogs off our airship as we fought our way to the engine room to hit a few pressure valves and keep the engine from blowing up, guided along the way by our captain named Sackbut (a name which I sincerely hope is kept). It culminated in a boss fight, a larger fire dog that periodically summoned cannon fire which needed to be dodged as it pelted the deck.

There are essentially three classes: a melee fighter called a Performer which uses either two-handed swords or polearms, a ranged gunner called a Composer, and magic users called Tuners. Tuners use their instruments to summon mostly offensive magic, though they can throw healing in when necessary. It seemed from the demo that there isn’t an emphasis on the holy trinity of tank-dps-healer, with most players capable of pumping out respectable damage without the need for a dedicated healer role.

The one thing I really wished for was platforming to be incorporated into the gameplay. The trailer showed characters hopping from boat to boat to get to the larger ship under attack, which looked like it could be really cool to do during a fight. Alas, the ship-hopping was just a cut-scene, though during our interview with the developers they did point out that they want to incorporate those types of platforming elements into the game at some point.

A North American release for Tiara Concerto is uncertain at this point, as the game is still awaiting its 2012 launch in its home base of Asia, but from the somewhat-localized English demo it seems likely that we’ll see it stateside soon after the initial release.

Happy Belated Birthday, Game Boy... Pocket! - Retro Revolution

Happy Belated Birthday, Game Boy... Pocket! - Retro Revolution

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

So the way my brain works, today I was sitting in my office and a thought popped into my head: The Game Boy was released in the States back in 1989, but when was the GBPocket released? It's my favorite incarnation of the system. The screen is black and white and as crisp as any other portable ever has been; it's tiny enough for my pocket (hence the name, I'd guess); and the GB library goes along with it. Even with the hatred I have for finding and keeping AAA batteries, I love my little Ice Blue bastard. And, as it turns out, it was let loose in the US in early 1996, making it 15 years old here in short order.

Which brings me to the topic... re-released consoles. Are they just another way for Company X to make more of the same, occasionally hike up the price or strip out features, and make serious extra bank in the process? Yes. Yes, it is. But what's great is that sometimes the product is made better for it; case in point, the GBPocket. Much of the time, there's hoopla about the idea of remodeling a familiar face and pushing it back into the public's hands.

Most of the time—especially back in the early days of remodels like the Atari 2600—they're done simply to make the experience more clean, easy to work. Making a four-switch VCS from a heavy-sixer isn't a huge deal, just a slight tweak. It's the same sort of experience with the Intellivision or the Game Boy; just a variation on the platform that keeps the overall experience essentially the same, but a few adjustments made on either the size or the projection (like the NES2's AV output). Some systems don't need one, but hey, let's remake the experience anyway (*cough*SNES*cough*Genesis*cough*) just to make what was once a bit of an eyesore into something more aesthetically pleasing. I don't don't know why the SNES had to be so awkwardly angular, but it didn't bother me enough to buy the SNES2 released a few years later.

Lately, though, revisions have more often than not been done to not only cheapen production costs, but remove functionality. Recently, Nintendo let out of the bag that a redesigned Wii was releasing in Europe without any of its former Gamecube functionality. It's the same move a few years later when Sony made with their remodeling of the PS3 and removing the PS2 functionality (which still bums me out). Microsoft didn't take such a notable step (there were only two damn games backwards compatible in the first place), but they did re-release the 360 with both a massive and smaller hard disc on board. Remember the Arcade pack that they sold without any hard drive at all? Dumb, right?

Everyone's guilty of it. Hell, Nintendo built a friggin' sales model out of re-launching the same thing a hundred times: Game Boy, Play It Loud Game Boys with different colors and transparent casings, Pocket, GB Lite, various Game Boy Colors and special editions of all of the above… yeesh, I just wanted to play Pokémon, guys. But at least they were kept somewhat standard.

Does a company constantly reselling re-imagining the look and playability of their console, though, hurt the market at all? Why complain if there's not a problem? I think it has always been inherently frustrating; I don't want to be coaxed into buying another variation of the same thing when I can see something new on the horizon, whether a month/year/five years away. I know it's just a ploy to get collectors like me excited ("YAY, new variation! This one's gonna be rare in 15 years!") and, to be honest, it does. But I'm not crazy. I swear I'm not crazy. I just get sick of thinking about how I own essentially the same thing ten times.

Put some of that "effort" into making me a new game, and we're in business. Otherwise, just let me enjoy my uniform console.

Fire Department 3 - ViTALiTY (Full ISO 2006)

Fire Department 3 - ViTALiTY (Full ISO/2006)

PC | 2006 | Publisher : Monte Cristo Multimedia | Developer:Monte Cristo | 1.48 GB
Genre: Adventure
Fire! Fire! Fire the developers responsible for taking such a promising premise (firefighting RTS) and turning it into such a mediocre game. Perhaps sacking is a bit harsh; Fire Department 3 does have its moments, but the problem is you are usually far too busy to enjoy them.
Heres how a typical mission works. Your units are dumped down beside a blaze and within seconds the objectives window starts screaming instructions. Extinguish that flaming electricity transformer! Recover those five injured scientists! Contain the fires by the fuel silo! Click. Click. Click. Click. A frantic minute passes and you get a couple of things done only for them to be instantly replaced by a couple more. Turn on those extractor fans! Bulldoze that gate! Rescue that kitten! More panicky clicking, more time sensitive objectives. By the time the victory screen pops up you are as frazzled as the hero narrators Gallic eyebrows.
Firefighting games obviously cant be too leisurely, but theres no good reason why they cant be more freeform than this. The devs have gone to the trouble of creating a very impressive fire and smoke propagation model that factors in things like oxygen supply, wind direction and ignition thresholds, yet you are so busy dashing round trying to complete the contrived tasks set by the control freak mission designers, you barely notice it. By the end of the thirteen episode campaign I was praying for a mission in which I arrived at a scene and was told, simply Put the fire out and save as many lives as possible.
Flaming cheek
There just arent enough meaningful choices in FD3. Areas where players might have had power are selfishly monopolised by the game makers. Take units for instance. Theres a good selection, but do we get to pick or purchase our own squads before a job? Not on your nelly. Apart from some token reinforcement decisions, you get what you are given and thats that. Being as the campaign follows the adventures of a single globetrotting fire team, youd think the devs might have thought to include some sort of persistent experience or skills system. Picking new upgrades for individual firefighters, choosing to rest weary or injured crewmen during certain missions... With a few inspired touches the game could have been so much better.
Shouldnt fireworks factories be built inside giant biscuit tins?
Predictably, the lack of choices extends to the campaign structure. Like a strict parent, FD3 forces you to finish one course before moving on to the next, but even on the lowest difficulty level progress can be third degree burns painful, and the puzzle like nature of the missions and numerous time limits ensure a lot of reloading. Those that do stick around until the end get rewarded with the blindingly obvious conclusion to the games thin storyline. Amazingly, it turns out that the roving French fire crew at the centre of the plot arent just hilariously unlucky. The fact they were in Kiev when a nuclear research lab was bombed, in Paris when a virus lab went up, on a Channel Tunnel train that caught fire, etcetera etcetera, wasnt just a coincidence! (My head is still spinning, my jaw is still slack.)
Ironically, the best of the scenarios are the ones with the most workaday settings. At one point during the French segment you are sent off to a city suburb to manage the aftermath of a huge gas explosion. Buried casualties have to be sniffed out with dog teams then extricated by strapping axe wielders, people trapped on upper floors need to be located by agile climbers then rescued with the aid of long ladder fire engines, blazes need to be extinguished. As usual you are trying to do all of these things at once which is horribly stressful, but its fun too. A game that generated incidents like these semi randomly, then let you tackle them using your own tactics and team selection, now that would be a firefighting game I could get really enthusiastic about.
Part of the reason the concurrent mission objectives and the time limits are such hard work is that a lot of the activities in the game require micro management. Though personnel and pumps will happily attack nearby fires without specific instructions, operations like rescues and indoor fire fighting must be carefully choreographed. Firemen wont open doors without your say so, which is wise considering the risk of backdrafts and flashovers, but equally they wont carry victims to safety unless instructed. Another area that can get quite fiddly is the switching of extinguishing agents. The game models four types of fire classic, electrical, chemical and metal and four types of substances for fighting them. Because maps often feature several flavours of flame, you sometimes need to re equip firemen at appropriate vehicles or hydrants. Its tactical texture, but its also another thing to think about during the manic missions.
One answer to FD3s scary workloads is to bring a friend to the inferno. All of the campaign missions can be played co operatively with up to four players sharing the same force. Just in case the squabbles over the fireboat and the rescue chopper get out of hand, there are also some large bespoke missions in which every player gets their own firehouse full of equipment and men. Not tempted? No, me neither.
One day someone is going to make an excellent strategy game about firefighting (this isnt it, by the way, just in case you havent been paying attention). If youll excuse the inexcusable combustion related puns, Monte Cristo has a good enough engine but it doesnt seem to have the necessary flare for level design or pacing. So unless youve got a burning desire to run around like a blue arsonist fly Id give this fraught fire escape a miss
